Spotlight on children's food
Ultra-processed food continues to be a hot topic, fuelled by recent studies such as the latest Food Foundation June 2024 report (A Neglected Generation), which is a sobering read.
Alarmingly, by ages 2-5, UPF’s account for nearly two thirds (61%) of calories consumed by UK children – a higher proportion than Australia and even the US.
We discussed the big picture, and the need for nutritious and convenient children’s food that support busy parents/carers. Not all processed foods are bad, particularly at the weaning stage when some processing e.g. puréeing is necessary. We also discussed the impact of industry influencers such as Henry Dimbleby and Dr. Federica Amati, and the role they’re playing in raising awareness on the importance of good nutrition for our children, and putting pressure on the Government to prioritise the health of the next generation. Organisations like Bite Back are rightly calling for better policies to make healthier food choices available, accessible and affordable to all. Ella's Kitchen has recently set ambitious targets to help improve children's eating habits, and more specifically, their fruit and vegetable intake via their products. We've seen a rise in premium, fresh or frozen baby food brands including Rumble Tums co-founded by nutritionist Madeleine Shaw. With a focus on great quality ingredients, and nutritionally sound recipes, these launches disrupt the category for the better, but are naturally not accessible for most people, at a premium price point.
