Ellen MacArthur Foundation event
We hosted a future forecasting seminar for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and members of their Big Food Redesign Challenge. This project supports challenger and multinational food businesses and retailers to redesign the food system to allow nature to thrive. We were invited to bring participants up to speed with the current and future food landscape, and how their new products fit into it.
We were delighted to be part of the Big Food Redesign process, as we hope this project will help catalyse and inspire the food industry to build a better food system that regenerates nature, based on the principles of a circular economy. Over 150 products from more than 60 organisations across the UK, US, Europe, Africa and Latin America are now working hard to turn their product designs into a reality through the Production Phase of the Challenge. UK brands involved include Apricity, Cook, Fortnum & Mason, Hodmedod’s, Natoora and Silo, with big brands like Danone and Heineken also at the table.
Our presentation focused on five key areas:
RELATIVE VALUE: how consumers are defining value beyond price
FUTURE-PROOF INGREDIENTS: creating a nature-positive food system with ingredients for a sustainable future
OUTSIDE THE BOX: innovation in packaging and format
CONNECTED HEALTH: the convergence of individual and planetary health
PURPOSEFUL POSITIONING: innovation in branding and positioning
Participants found the digital event useful and inspiring. As many of them are already at the forefront of food and drink innovation, the themes rang true with projects they have in the pipeline, as well as sparking new conversations.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a charity committed to creating a circular economy that’s designed to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature. Set up in 2010 by long-distance yachtswoman and activist Ellen MacArthur, after she completed the fastest solo sail around the world and learnt the true meaning of a circular economy living on her boat at that time.
